Been looking at going to Las Vegas in August but airfare keeps jumping up, probably due to fuel prices so do I lock in now or wait and see?
Gambling on Airfare
Chitown,
We are from Chicago also and are heading out the end of Sept. I always typically gamble on airfare and book closer to the date. However I did lock in seats a few weeks ago on American for a Thursday evening departure returning Sunday late morning. Got em for under $200 pretax and fees. I would suggest depending on what you are being quoted to lock in. Unless something dramatic happens with oil or anything else I dont think your going to get much lower these days. My 2 cents.
Gambling on Airfare
';They'; keep saying (whoever ';they'; are) that the issue this summer is not going to be one of price but more one of capacity, with more people flying and fewer flights to pick from.
So if you know you wanna go, maybe it%26#39;s a good idea to bite the bullet and get a seat since you%26#39;re talking August.
I wouldn%26#39;t gamble on it, the airlines have already purchased their fuel for the summer. Less flights more people. I%26#39;m flying nonstop on Southwest for less than $200 6/30-7/5. Went with Southwest MGM package, much cheaper than doing it on my own) Flights are starting to fill up.
The problem is that I cannot commit at this time.
Still don%26#39;t know if I will be going but if i go I will probably shift from the Plaza, which is getting bad reviews lately to the California which was fine when I stayed there in October of 2005.
Another mystery, will the Lady join me or am I a solo act? Both options have their benefits.
Worst case, I skip the August trip and sit on the S/V Buccaneer n Waukegan Harbor and drnk rum drinks.
I can always hook up with the Mailman in November for another memorable and mostly unpublishable dive trip.
I booked a SW package the end of April for August, staying Wed-Mon at the Flamingo for $976 (2 people with taxes) . I checked 3 weeks later just to see what it was going for and the priced jumped up to $1476. If I would have booked seperate the air was $476 for 2 roundtrip (7am out and 2:55pm back) which are great flight times. The hotel was $760 by itself. Do you have your hotel booked already? I would hurry , the prices will continue to go up.
S W A vacations are good , IF, you dont have pull for comped rooms.
BUT, if air fare specials come about, you are stuck.
IF, you are flexible, stand alone room and air fare specials are best way to go.
The more I look at the prices, the more disgusted I get.
I am hooked up with deals from Downtown /Fremont Stret hotels. I prefer that area to the Strip. I am not concerned that they will go up if the airfare remains high they may be hurting for guests.
I%26#39;m in the same boat. The few airlines outside of Southwest are offering their best prices at the crappiest departure times, even in August. I am probably going to bite the bullet and book with SWA this weekend. I am not happy about it but since I am only two round trips away from a free trip, I figure I may as well. I hope and pray another airline enters the market to do direct flights from Chicago to Las Vegas because its clear some competition is needed.
I could go with United and spend my accumulated miles but I wanted to hang on to them for a possible upgrade on a long flight
Hey Leo, I%26#39;d much rather have SWA be the major airline here than NWA. Its almost two hundred bucks more expensive to fly out of Minnesota to Vegas on the weekend I wanted to go than to fly out of Chicago. Plus, the Chicago times are better and its non stop. I hate Northwest. God I hate them.
