Grand Canyon - What's the best way to get there?

We rented a car in Vegas and drove to the South Rim, spent a night in Grand Canyon Village, and returned to Vegas the next day. It took about 5-6 hours each way. October is a good time to visit because the kids are in school and the park will be less crowded. Bring a warm jacket in October; the Canyon weather will be noticeably colder than the weather in Vegas.

There are many 1-day helicopter and plane tours from Vegas to the Canyon as well. There is an airport at Grand Canyon, so you could also catch a commuter flight from Vegas to GC and back, but that%26#39;s probably the most expensive option.

Depends on what you want to do when you get there - for me I%26#39;m happy just to sit and look at it for hours - pictures/films/TV programmes do not prepare you for its beauty.

Nothing beats helicopter there for a first view at the overall size of it - awesome

If you have the time..... hire a car and drive to Williams - it%26#39;s a very comfortable one day drive, in which you could also pay a quick visit to Hoover Dam en route if you wish.

There%26#39;s plenty of reasonably priced accommodation in Williams - just shop around for a good deal when you arrive.

Get the train to %26amp; from the GC the next day - we haven%26#39;t done it ourselves (we drove to the GC) but we will next time; they say it%26#39;s great (google GC Railway for details).

Spend the second night in Williams - it%26#39;s a quirky little place - then drive %26#39;home%26#39; to Vegas the next day.

';Best'; is going to be a matter of opinion, quickest is the helicopter, and cheapest I guess would be a bus trip. Or hitchhiking lol.

I think the best way to see the Grand Canyon is to rent a car in Las Vegas, drive to the Canyon and spend the night. Get up in the morning for the sunrise and head back to Las Vegas in time for lunch.

Helicopter and bus tours don%26#39;t give you enough time to see much, and you see it in the company of a bunch of other tourists. Just my opinion.

I would also recommend renting a car and staying there overnight. You really can%26#39;t appreciate the beauty unless you spend some time there. Taking a bus tour might be the cheapest way but I don%26#39;t think it would be worth it. You will be stuck on a bus for 5 hours each way. You will have very little time actually at the canyon considering how long the trip will take. When they tell you to get on that bus- you have to get on it even if you want to spend more time there. They have quick helicopter and plane trips but they will be expensive-and again you are on their schedule, not your own.

An overnight stay in the Canyon depends on how long you%26#39;re stopping in Vegas for. Personally, I wouldn%26#39;t want to stay overnight in the Canyon on a short trip to Vegas as it would mean one less night and 2 less days to spend in Vegas!

The west rim is the only place you%26#39;re able to decend to the Canyon floor as this is owned by the Hualapai Tribe. The rest of the Canyon is owned by the NPS.

There%26#39;s not much else to see and do in the Canyon than take it in. The Canyon Skywalk is due to open in the 4th quarter of 2006 so you might be in luck... www.destinationgrandcanyon.com/skywalk.html.

It was still being built when we were there but it looks like it%26#39;ll be amazing (Though my boyfriend disagrees)

For something different, why not try a ATV tour? If I visit the Canyon again it%26#39;s something i%26#39;d like to do.

If you are driving, you won%26#39;t be able to really see everything you want to see and appreciate it without spending the night. I think the flexibility (or inflexibility) of your schedule in LV should dictate whether you do car or helicopter.
