First time to Vegas - Rental Car for one day

We going to Vegas for the first time in two weeks and are thinking about renting a car for a day to do some sightseeing.

Any suggestions on a reasonable itinerary of must see sights would be appreciated.

First time to Vegas - Rental Car for one day

you can do lake las vegas and red rock canyon in one day. I rented at that place right next to the boardwalk a couple of times. Exotic rentals i think it was called. they have 2 locations

I would definitely go see Hoover Dam/Lake Mead/Valley of Fire. It is about an hour away. The scenery at VOF is spectacular. They have the most amazing red sandstone formations. They have some short and long hikes that are fabulous. It will be hot but you can just drive through and stop at various formations. Definitely go see the petroglyphs. Bring plenty of water, food, suntan lotion, sunglasses and a hat. You will also enjoy Lake Mead-either driving around or stopping at various points. Hoover Dam is also interesting.

Another great place to see is Red Rock Canyon. It is closer to Vegas but is not as spectacular as VOF. It has a nice 11 mile one way loop you can drive that has pull off points where you can go for a hike or just enjoy the scenerly. Like VOF you can go for a short or long hike. It is a favorite of rock climbers.

If you want to cool off you can have lunch at Mt. Charleston. It is about one hour from the strip and it is about 20-30 degrees cooler than Vegas. They also have hiking trails.

It I had to choose just one trip I would pick the Valley of Fire/ Hoover Dam/Lake Mead one.

Most of the casinos have a rental agency counter close to reservation desk area.

Cars are in casino garage.

HOOVER DAM tour and valley of fire are close together on East side of town.

Red Rock canyon is on west side of town.

You could do all 3 in a day, Dawn at Hoover Dam, Sunset at Red rock canyon.

Take large bottles of water, you will need them.

Where are you staying? Dollar has desks in Bally%26#39;s and Paris. I would suggest reserving your car now so you get the better rates and the car of your choice--you take potluck when you just walk up to the counter. You might also want to consider renting the car near the end of your trip and just returning it to the Dollar place at the airport--depends on your agenda. We do this quite often. Just make sure when you rent the car you indicate where you are returning it. Also, remember that most of the car counters at the hotels are not open 24/7.

I agree with the previous poster about renting before you go. We rented a car for a day at the Mirage. I had called to inquire about prices before we arrived...had to pay quite a bit more than quoted to me on the phone due to their availability, etc when we just walked up to the rental desk in the hotel to get a car. We were not sure we wanted to go to Hoover Dam or which day, etc. If you know that you want to do this definitely rent before you go. We enjoyed the drive to Hoover Dam and made lots of stops along the way.

DH doesn%26#39;t want to plan anything in advance, I had to twist his arm just to get dinner reservations at Delmonico and the tickets to Mystere ahead of time.

We will just have to pay the extra amount and hope they have cars available.

Does anyone have any links for maps or info on VOF or Red Rock canyon?

I agree with renting toward the end of your trip. That way, you%26#39;ll save on transportation back to the airport. Depending on what you%26#39;re wanting to do when (I understand DH wants NO itinerary), you could also rent AT the airport, and return to hotel. Or rent for the week so you%26#39;ll have the car and can go to these places when YOU want. We did this, even tho I swore we wouldn%26#39;t even rent a car, but after checking into it I realized it was just a better deal all the way around to rent for the week. We rented from Alamo for $158 for the week for a midsize, all taxes and fees included. We used the code from ACG, and got this great deal.

When adding up taxis/shuttles/Deuce, plus the sheer freedom of being able to go to a grocery store to pick up water, beer, etc., and going anywhere we want off strip (I am DYING to try that mexican place, Lindo Michoan), it just made sense. On our ';drinking days/nights'; we%26#39;ll leave the car in the garage and stay on-strip!

Good luck, have fun and WIN BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!
