Hoover Dam ?

Family will be in LV mid July and will be renting a car. Want to go to the dam. What is the best time to tour and how long of a drive is it?

Also understand that the dam tour is self guided so no reservations are needed.

Hoover Dam ?

Since July will be so hot I suggest going early in the morning. From the Strip it is about a 40 minute ride in normal traffic if my memory serves me correctly. We went back in 2001-

I don%26#39;t know if you will be happy looking at the dam on your own- back then we took the ';dam tour';- don%26#39;t remember how much exactly but it was a guided tour and allowed us access to areas I don%26#39;t think you can go to on your own- the history involved with the building of the dam is fascinating and our tour guide was terrific and fun.

Perhaps you could get more info online as to prices and options.

Hoover Dam ?

I agree- go as early as possible. We rented a car a couple of weeks ago and from the strip it took 40 min. I%26#39;d be there by 9:00 as lots of tour buses show up shorty after that. We took the tour and it cost us I think $11/pp. It consisted of a short movie, and a guided tour. Honestly I didnt%26#39; think it was worth it. The only part that I thought was worth it was the observation deck and the view you got from there.

Be there when the tour office opens.

you will avoid the bus tours and not have to wait.

Tours down inside the DAM are guided, when operating.

CANNOT afford to have a tourist push buttons or turn valves.

Give youeself 1 hour travel time due to morning rush hour.

After the DAM, proceed to Valley of Fire.

Buy several large bottles of drinking water. A MUST.
